What is the UPSC Civil Services Examination?

The Civil Services Examination is an examination conducted by the Union Public Services Commission to select candidates for the main services of the Government of India. The exam is aimed to evaluate a candidates academic as well as analytical, decision making abilities and overall personality.

The entire recruitment process is divided into three stages. The first stage is known as the Prelims, this is a screening process and is objective in nature. UPSC Civil Services Examination 2026 Official notification was published on 4 February 2026. From 4 February 2026, candidates could apply for examinations. Due to technical glitches and heavy traffic, the last date to apply was extended to 27 February 2026, 6 PM for applicants.

The main examination is going to start from 21 August 2026, for 5 days, and the Preliminary Examination is going to be on 24 May 2026 (Sunday). Candidates must regularly review the official Notifications for updates.

UPSC Eligibility Criteria 2026

Those candidates who meet the age, education, and number of attempts requirements may apply for the exam. The minimum age limit for applicants is 21 years, while for general category applicants, the maximum age limit is 32 years. According to the government norm, specific age relaxation applies. From the general category, OBC applicants receive a 3-year age relaxation, while SC and ST applicants receive a 5-year age relaxation, and additional relaxation applies to PwBD applicants.

Regarding education, the candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Final-year students may apply provisionally, but they must submit their degree prior to the Main Examination.

To become an IAS, IPS, or IFS officer, you need to be an Indian citizen. For General and EWS categories, there are 6 attempts. For OBC and PwBD categories, there are 9 attempts. There are no limits for SC/ST categories, as long as they are within the age limits.

How to Apply for UPSC Civil Services Exam 2026

The entire process is online and has to be done during the specified dates. You have to register on the site and complete your profile with your personal and educational information, as well as upload your documents and pay for the exam.
